The CE-MARC Study:

Clinical Evaluation of MAgnetic Resonance imaging in Coronary heart disease

In mid-2005 the Academic Unit of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Leeds, in conjunction with the Cardiac MRI Unit at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, was awarded £1.3 million by the British Heart Foundation to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in coronary heart disease. This is the CE-MARC study (Clinical Evaluation of MAgnetic Resonance imaging in Coronary heart disease).

During the five-year project, colleagues in Cardiology, Medical Physics, Health Economics and the Clinical Trials Research Unit will scan 750 patients, and follow their progress for three years to see whether cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging can accurately predict future complications and the need for a heart bypass operation or coronary angioplasty.

The aim of the study is to progress the technique from a promising research tool into a clinically relevant, cost-effective investigation for the NHS.
